וָאוֹלֵ֥ךְ אֶתְכֶ֖ם קֽוֹמְמִיּֽוּת׃
Va’Olayhk Etchem

I broke your chains
Removed your pains
I helped you stand
And held your hand

Va’Olayhk Etchem
Kom’me’miyut (2x)

From our necks,
You removed the yolk.
Now we bask in your Torah
Now we have hope

Walk in my ways
Teach us to treasure our days

Emor

In the midst of a harvest
We share our bread
Planting seeds
Winter we shed

Eleh Moaday Adonai (2x)

Sharing our stories
Chag HaMaztzot
Transform the year
Embrace the Hope

Count the Omer
Number our days
Spirit of the Earth
Teach us your ways

Eleh Moaday Adonai (2x)

Leave the corner of your field;
Let the neighbors enjoy the yield
If Torah is true
Make it speak to you.

Eleh Moaday Adonai (2x)

The omer, now we’ve reached the end.
Mosheh rabbenu Ascends
Chag hashavuot, It’s Sinai for all.
This year, will you answer the call?

Eleh Moaday Adonai (4x)

Akharei Moht

(Lev 2-3)

For in a cloud I make myself seen, over the purgation-cover
In this manner Aaron is to enter the holy shrine
(Everett Fox translation, The Schocken Bible, 1995)

Niggun

Ki B’anan Ayraeh El ha-Kaporet
B’zot Aharon Yavo El HaKodesh

Between me and you
I will appear
A misty cloud, a salty tear
Holy Holy Sacred Shrine
Enter into My Tent Divine

V’al kol Yiserael
V’al Kol Yoshvay Tevel
V’imru Amen
This week we read Parashat Metzora on Shabbat morning and the special haftarah for Shabbat HaGadol, the great Shabbat before the Jewish holiday of Pesach or Passover. There is a messianic element to this holiday in that it is an auspicious time to welcome Elijah, who is said to be the herald of the savior; the one who will usher in a time of peace and integration.  In order for Elijah to come, we need the hearts of the parents to turn to the children and those of the children to the parents. Though not literally children and parents, in this moment, the children are the “Diaspora only” Jews and the parents are those whose see a Jewish future that is solely dependent on the Jewish State of Israel-each one thinks they know the best way forward; each feels they are expressing Jewish values of justice and righteousness from their depths of their souls; each think they know the path to protect Jewish life for future generations. At this moment, as I pray that Elijah sends some guidance to our seders this year, I pray that we Jews will turn toward each other and not away from one another so that the future of the Jewish people will be secure in both Israel and the Diaspora and love will pour forth for all peoples of all lands.

Behold, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of the great, awesome day of YHWH.

וְהֵשִׁ֤יב לֵב־אָבוֹת֙ עַל־בָּנִ֔ים וְלֵ֥ב בָּנִ֖ים עַל־אֲבוֹתָ֑ם
Yah shall reconcile parents with children and children with their parents,

(Malachi 3:23-24)

Vayidom Aharon / Aaron was Silent Song for Parashat Shemini

4/21/2025

Parashat Shemini Vayidom Aharon
Aaron was Silent

Vayidom Aharon

Nadav and Avihu sat at the feasts.
Smoke and fire transforming the priests.
With gratitude for the one true God
The priests joined together, a holy pod.

Vayidom Aharon

Leaving their peers, seeking more light,
Perhaps there is more in the dark of the night.
An eerie fire burned; its embers light green,
they reached out to touch this strange new scene.

Vayidom Aharon

How strange it is that this moment unfolds.
Betwixt and between,
Breaking the mold!
Complete was the ritual for all who remained,
but not for Nadav and Avihu.

Vayidom Aharon

God looked out on beloved priests,
Watching their fires burn out.
Alas, there was green fire round the bend;
Nadav and Avihu held the pan by its end.

Vayidom Aharon

The air became thin,
As God held his breath.
A vacuum of fire
ensured coming death

Vayidom Aharon

Moses leapt up and the brothers ran in.
Aaron fell down to the ground.
God looked away and barely uttered aloud:
“Through those near to me
I’m sanctified.”

Vayidom Aharon

Don’t cry and don’t weep;
This is not on me!
The priesthood was meant for you.
Guard it with all that is precious and good.
So much left to be understood…

Vayidom Aharon

Parsha Vayikra The Way of the Open Heart Song Lyrics

3/31/2025

Vayiqra: The Way of the Open Heart

Based on the offerings as presented in Chapters 1-5. More details on these offerings will be presented in next week’s Torah portion.

Olah -an offering that is totally burned
Shelamim- an offering of well-being (lit. whole), often utilized to express gratitude (more on this in next parashah)
Hataat-a purification offering for unrealized sins, mistakes, and unintentional actions.
Asham-a guilt offering, for intentional sins against friends and people in our community, such as theft, deceit, defrauding.

Chorus:

This is the way of humanity.
An avenue you can reach for me.
This is way of the human heart,
Korban L’adonai (Trans. an offering to God)

Olah Shelamim
Hataat Asham
Passions of the open heart
Korban L’adonai

Olah rising up
Nothing remains
All of my soul
All that I claim
I give to you all that I am
Olah, nothing left of me remains. (2x)

Chorus:

Shelamim, Shalem
What is whole and good and true
For all that I owe to you
Shelamim, I offer thanks for the whole
And I share it with the people in my fold. (2x)

Chorus:

Hataat, Make me pure
I know not what I did
Something feels awry inside of me
Let me go, let me leave
Release what I see
Hataat, make me pure once again. (2x)

Chorus:

Asham, ashamed I am today
I turned to greed;
I looked away
From you, and what is true
I make amends through You,
Asham, Put my shame to end
And I return to my people a friend.

Chorus:

Parashat Pekudei Song There Once Was A Tabernacle Yael Krauz & Rabbi Elizabeth Goldstein

3/24/2025

Parashat Pekudei “There once was a Tabernacle”
Lyrics and Music by Yael Krauz
With the help of Rabbi Elizabeth

There once was a tabernacle.
Not done and not complete.
The Jews set out on a journey.
And traveled the desert by feet.

Copper, bronze, silver, and gold
Colors that all look so bold.
The people took the story once told.
Uniting them with the tabernacle.

The tabernacle served as a home.
For the priests who proudly wore the stones
The 12 tribes joined on their own.
To create the tabernacle

There once was a tabernacle.
Soon to be finished.
Just as God instructed.
And just what Moses wished.

The cloud descended on the tent.
And watched as the Israelites came and went.
Fire by night and sun by day.
God was with them all the way.

Moshe wanted to create the throne.
So, God could finally take a seat.
Everything was perfect now.
The tabernacle finally complete.

There once was a tabernacle.
The work was finally done.
We made a space for holiness.
A tribute to the One
