Turn in Turn out, ready yourselves. a great peace is yet to come Face in Face out, don’t look back The path ahead will clear Doors open wide All aligned As we await for you to appear Eliyahu Eliyahu Eliyahu Eliyahu HaNavi Eliyahu Eliyahu Eliyahu Eliyahu HaTishbi Oseh Shalom B’mromav Ya’seh shalom Alayenu V’al kol Yiserael V’al Kol Yoshvay Tevel V’imru Amen This week we read Parashat Metzora on Shabbat morning and the special haftarah for Shabbat HaGadol, the great Shabbat before the Jewish holiday of Pesach or Passover. There is a messianic element to this holiday in that it is an auspicious time to welcome Elijah, who is said to be the herald of the savior; the one who will usher in a time of peace and integration. In order for Elijah to come, we need the hearts of the parents to turn to the children and those of the children to the parents. Though not literally children and parents, in this moment, the children are the “Diaspora only” Jews and the parents are those whose see a Jewish future that is solely dependent on the Jewish State of Israel-each one thinks they know the best way forward; each feels they are expressing Jewish values of justice and righteousness from their depths of their souls; each think they know the path to protect Jewish life for future generations. At this moment, as I pray that Elijah sends some guidance to our seders this year, I pray that we Jews will turn toward each other and not away from one another so that the future of the Jewish people will be secure in both Israel and the Diaspora and love will pour forth for all peoples of all lands. Behold, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of the great, awesome day of YHWH. Yah shall reconcile parents with children and children with their parents, (Malachi 3:23-24) Metzora / פָּרָשַׁת מְּצֹרָע Hebcal Date Sefaria Torah Reading Leviticus 14:1-15:33 Song lyrics & Song music by Rabbi Elizabeth W. Parashat Shemini Vayidom Aharon Aaron was Silent Vayidom Aharon Nadav and Avihu sat at the feasts. Smoke and fire transforming the priests. With gratitude for the one true God The priests joined together, a holy pod. Vayidom Aharon Leaving their peers, seeking more light, Perhaps there is more in the dark of the night. An eerie fire burned; its embers light green, they reached out to touch this strange new scene. Vayidom Aharon How strange it is that this moment unfolds. Betwixt and between, Breaking the mold! Complete was the ritual for all who remained, but not for Nadav and Avihu. Vayidom Aharon God looked out on beloved priests, Watching their fires burn out. Alas, there was green fire round the bend; Nadav and Avihu held the pan by its end. Vayidom Aharon The air became thin, As God held his breath. A vacuum of fire ensured coming death Vayidom Aharon Moses leapt up and the brothers ran in. Aaron fell down to the ground. God looked away and barely uttered aloud: “Through those near to me I’m sanctified.” Vayidom Aharon Don’t cry and don’t weep; This is not on me! The priesthood was meant for you. Guard it with all that is precious and good. So much left to be understood… Vayidom Aharon Shmini / פָּרָשַׁת שְּׁמִינִי Hebcal Date Sefaria Torah Reading Leviticus 9:1-11:47
