Parashat Shemini Vayidom Aharon Aaron was Silent Vayidom Aharon Nadav and Avihu sat at the feasts. Smoke and fire transforming the priests. With gratitude for the one true God The priests joined together, a holy pod. Vayidom Aharon Leaving their peers, seeking more light, Perhaps there is more in the dark of the night. An eerie fire burned; its embers light green, they reached out to touch this strange new scene. Vayidom Aharon How strange it is that this moment unfolds. Betwixt and between, Breaking the mold! Complete was the ritual for all who remained, but not for Nadav and Avihu. Vayidom Aharon God looked out on beloved priests, Watching their fires burn out. Alas, there was green fire round the bend; Nadav and Avihu held the pan by its end. Vayidom Aharon The air became thin, As God held his breath. A vacuum of fire ensured coming death Vayidom Aharon Moses leapt up and the brothers ran in. Aaron fell down to the ground. God looked away and barely uttered aloud: “Through those near to me I’m sanctified.” Vayidom Aharon Don’t cry and don’t weep; This is not on me! The priesthood was meant for you. Guard it with all that is precious and good. So much left to be understood… Vayidom Aharon Shmini / פָּרָשַׁת שְּׁמִינִי Hebcal Date Sefaria Torah Reading Leviticus 9:1-11:47

More details on these offerings will be presented in next week’s Torah portion. Olah -an offering that is totally burned Shelamim- an offering of well-being (lit. whole), often utilized to express gratitude (more on this in next parashah) Hataat-a purification offering for unrealized sins, mistakes, and unintentional actions. Asham-a guilt offering, for intentional sins against friends and people in our community, such as theft, deceit, defrauding. Chorus: This is the way of humanity. An avenue you can reach for me. This is way of the human heart, Korban L’adonai (Trans. an offering to God) Olah Shelamim Hataat Asham Passions of the open heart Korban L’adonai Olah rising up Nothing remains All of my soul All that I claim I give to you all that I am Olah, nothing left of me remains. (2x) Chorus: Shelamim, Shalem What is whole and good and true For all that I owe to you Shelamim, I offer thanks for the whole And I share it with the people in my fold. (2x) Chorus: Hataat, Make me pure I know not what I did Something feels awry inside of me Let me go, let me leave Release what I see Hataat, make me pure once again. Not done and not complete. The Jews set out on a journey. And traveled the desert by feet. Copper, bronze, silver, and gold Colors that all look so bold. The people took the story once told. Uniting them with the tabernacle. The tabernacle served as a home. For the priests who proudly wore the stones The 12 tribes joined on their own. To create the tabernacle There once was a tabernacle. Soon to be finished. Just as God instructed. And just what Moses wished. The cloud descended on the tent. And watched as the Israelites came and went. Fire by night and sun by day. God was with them all the way. Moshe wanted to create the throne. So, God could finally take a seat. Everything was perfect now. The tabernacle finally complete. There once was a tabernacle. The work was finally done. We made a space for holiness.
