Shemen La’maor - Parsha Tetzaveh
(based on Exodus 27: 20-21)

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid
Eternal Light Eternal Flame
Surround Your Holy Name
Eternal Flame Eternal Light
Shedding sparks throughout the Night

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid

Illuminate with pure oil
Eternal light forevermore
From the evening until morn
Toiling priests in garb adorned

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid

May-erev Ad Boker (3x)
Lifney Havayah

Engrave their tribal names-
On a plate for Yisrael
Placed upon the heart,
To remind us of our start.

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid

Khukat Olam L’dorotam (3x)
May-ayt b’nai Yisrael

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid

Eternal Light Eternal Flame
Surround Your Holy Name
Eternal Flame Eternal Light
Shedding sparks throughout the Night

Shemen La’maor (3x)
L’ha-a-lot Ner Tamid

Shemot: The One Who Didn’t Know Lyrics
Based on Exodus Chapter 1

Asher lo Yada
Lo yada et Yosef
Asher lo Yada
Lo yada et Yosef

Asher lo Yada
Lo yada et Yosef
Asher lo Yada
Hu melekh Hadash

V’tirena Ha-meyaldot
Et HaElohim
V’lo asah ka-asher diber
V’tehkayena et ha-yeladim

V’eleh shemot B’nai Yisrael (3x)
H’ba-im Mitzrayma

Translation:

The one who didn’t know Joseph
The one who didn’t know him
He was a new king of Egypt

But the midwives feared the merciful God
And did not do as commanded
Rather they enabled the lives of the children

And these are the names of the children of Israel
Who came down to Egypt

Vayetzay Vayetzei Parsha

Genesis 28:17

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh Lyrics Music

On a stone where angels tread
Jacob lay down to rest his head
Ascending up high and down again
A ladder went forth with no clear end

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh

Havayah is who I am
And to you I give this land
I trust that all who live with you,
Will be blessed with angels too.

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh

I will stand guard over you
And your children will be blessed too
When it seems like I’ve gone dark
I’ll shine my light upon your heart

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh

I did not know
What filled this space
was Havayah
in this holy place

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh

Shamayim’s door
is open wide
To renew myself
And leave my pride.

Mah Norah Hamaqom Hazeh

Rebecca's Twins Toldot Genesis 25:19-28:9 Music

Rebecca's Twins - Toldot

Rebecca watched her twins sons grow.
And God saw she was in the know.
She called her youngest to her side.
Son, Listen to my voice:

Vayomer haKol Kol Yaakov
V’ha-yadayim yeday Aysav.

Come near my son and heed my voice
Bring the foods and meat of choice
Your father’s eyes are dim and weak
So place the skins upon your cheek!

Vayomer haKol Kol Yaakov
V’ha-yadayim yeday Aysav.

Are you Esau, the eldest one?
With shameful affirmation
Lying to his patriarch
Jacob hid inside the dark

Vayomer haKol Kol Yaakov
V’ha-yadayim yeday Aysav.

Is there nothing left for me?
Esau cried out angrily.
His father held out empty hands,
And Esau dreamed of vengeful plans.

Vayomer haKol Kol Yaakov
V’ha-yadayim yeday Aysav.

A Pitcher and A Well, An Ode to Reevkah  Chayye Sarah Genesis 23:1-25:18 Music and Lyrics

Chayyei Sarah Song
Based on 24:43-45
here, I have stationed myself by the water spring;
may it be
that the girl who comes out to draw,
to whom I say: Pray give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,
and she says to me: You drink, and I will also draw for your camels—
let her be the woman whom YHWH has decided on for the son of my lord.
[And] I, even before I had finished speaking in my heart,
here, Rivka came out, her pitcher on her shoulder,
and she went down to the spring and drew.
I said to her: Pray give me to drink!

A Pitcher and A Well: An Ode to Reevkah Lyrics
Lyrics by Elizabeth Goldstein
(Inspired by hevruta with Rebecca Marquis)

Balancing the pitcher on her shoulder
Reevkah arrives at the well
The Thirst of a stranger for water and life
To Recover a woman, a mother, and a wife
Nourishing camels bent at the knee
Who are you he says?
Whose Facing me?
I’ve come on a mission from south and from west
Is there any chance you have room for a guest?

A young man is waiting, so lost far away
Searching the desert; longing to pray
At the Well of Vision he tried to repair
The hole that was left by his mother’s despair
But lo, the well’s eye did not see
That all roads lead back to you and to me
A new generation is bound to grow
Gather your things, come on let’s go!

Will you go with this man, leave us and the East?
Could you start a new life, could you find peace?
Do you have new seeds that you’d like to sow?
Enough with the questions, Okay I’ll go.
They left with the camels, the bags and the plan
To find Yitzhak, his people and clan
Without looking back, Reevkah smiled to herself,
It all started with a pitcher and a well.

Vayera: Covenant through Narrative Happenstance, A Call to Justice

For I have singled him out, that he may instruct his children and his posterity to keep the way of ה' by doing what is just and right, in order that ה' may bring about for Abraham what has been promised him.”

A Call To Justice Lyrics

Avraham I have known you
Your children I have chosen
To bring the world a message of my Will:

V’shamru Derech Hashem
Laasot tzadekah u’mishpat

My way is clear:
Justice is Dear
Tzedakah is always at your side.

V’shamru Derech Hashem
Laasot tzadekah u’mishpat

Tzedakah U’mishpat

Between You and Me
Lyrics by Elizabeth Goldstein

Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, between my herders and yours, for we are kin.
Is not the whole land before you? Let us separate: if you go north, I will go south; and if you go south, I will go north.”

Lyrics Between Me and You: A renewed Plea for a Two-State solution
Al na Tehi Merivah Bayni U’Vaynecha
Al na Tehi Merivah Bayni U’Vaynecha

Halo Kol Ha-Aretz Lefanecha
Halo Kol Ha-Aretz Lefanecha

Hi-pared Na May-Alay
Hi-pared Na May-Alay

Snuff out the flickers of our strife.
Fighting is not the flame of life.
The Anger Between You and Me
Let it die out eternally.

Take your pick of this land.
So that our peace may surely be at hand
Let us go our ways separately,
So that our people can be free.

Al na Tehi Merivah Bayni U’Vaynecha
Al na Tehi Merivah Bayni U’Vaynecha

Halo Kol Ha-Aretz Lefanecha
Halo Kol Ha-Aretz Lefanecha
